Chicka-chicka-chicka, Slim Shady

The long game: how controversy builds the most loyal lists.

This type of email won't necessarily make you the most amount of sales right now. And that's okay.

That's not its role.

You need a bit of a longer time horizon to reap the benefits of this kind of email. And those benefits can be much bigger and longer-lasting than any tactic that just brings you sales right now.

If you do it right, you can become one of the most well-known celebrities in history, like Eminem. Or a huge name in your niche, like Daniel Throssell.

What you do with this email is find an opinion you have that goes against the norm (like that you don't need sales pages to sell... or that claims and promises are overrated... or that pineapple is actually good on pizza).

And PASSIONATELY put it right in front of your reader's face!

If you can deliver a controversial opinion in a controversial way, that's the wombo combo. But you can also have just one or the other and it still works wonders.

Being controversial curates your list in the best way possible.

Naturally, you'll have people who disagree with you.

Actually, most of them will — otherwise you're not really being controversial.

Some will even take the time and respond to you with a hate comment (which you can use as email fodder and make more money, as we'll see below).

Some of them will unsubscribe and leave.

But these people wouldn't buy from you anyway!

And if they did, they wouldn't spend a lot and they'd make terrible customers overall.

While the ones that agree with your controversial opinions will become greater supporters of yours.

Your relationship with your list will grow much stronger, making you more money — since you'll have a high-quality, money-making list — you also become a greater authority.

Which makes more people notice you, follow you and even agree with you just because you have higher status now.

I mean, really, look at Eminem. He is one of the most well-known and liked artists in history. And he was talking all kinds of shit (still is, to a point).

But be careful.

This is a very strong way to build an amazing following and rise in fame and status. But there's a reason why not everyone succeeds.

Because when you're controversial, you need a good reason to be doing that. You need to stand for something.

And you need to be incredible at what you do

There's no denying that Eminem is the most technical rapper in history. That combined with his controversial language and topic selection is what propelled him to the top.

If it was only one or the other, he wouldn't have nearly as much success.

And the same applies to your niche, whatever it is.

You can grow much higher and make much more sales when you're controversial than you would if you tried to stay vanilla and please everybody.

RememberDon't be vanilla ice cream. Be lemon. Or bubblegum. Or After Eight.
